  • 1976 - Computer Shack is incorporated, created by William Millard.
  • 1998 - Apple Computer releases the AppleWorks 5 software suite. Price is US$99; upgrade price is US$79.
  • 1999 - A large earthquake registering 7.6 on the Richter scale shakes Taiwan, leading to a two-week halt to manufacturing of many components of personal computers.
  • 2000 - McAfee.com and F-Secure researchers discover the first handheld computer virus "Phage", which targets the Palm OS.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1945 - The Goofy film Hockey Homicide is released to theaters.
  • 1951 - The Pluto film Cold Turkey is released.
  • 1955 - The ABC TV network airs the Disneyland TV show, entitled Behind the True-Life Cameras - Olympic Elk, showing the making of the films Secrets of Life, and The African Lion.
  • 1969 - The NBC TV network airs the The Wonderful World of Disney show, featuring My Dog, The Thief, part one.
  • 1975 - The NBC TV network airs The Wonderful World of Disney show, featuring The Boy Who Talked to Badgers, part two.
  • 1984 - Bass Brothers Enterprises publicly notifies the Securities and Exchange Commission and Disney that they now own 8.6 percent of Disney's outstanding shares.
  • 1984 - Frank Wells flies to Arizona to meet with Card Walker on a fishing trip. Walker had been leaning toward Dennis Stanfill, but Wells convinces him to go with the Eisner/Wells team.
  • 1984 - Togo issues eleven postage stamps depicting various Disney characters, for the 50th anniversary of Donald Duck.
  • 1986 - The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences awards an Emmy Award (Outstanding Comedy Series) to the Walt Disney Studios for The Golden Girls TV show.
  • 1986 - The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences awards an Emmy Award (Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series) to Betty White for her role in The Golden Girls TV show.
  • 1986 - The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences awards an Emmy Award (Outstanding Writing in a Comedy Series) to Barry Fanaro and Mort Nathan for their work on The Golden Girls TV show.
  • 1987 - The first of 65 episodes of DuckTales begin airing on 121 TV stations, reaching 83% of TV households.
  • 1991 - The NBC TV network debuts the Disney TV show The Torkelsons.
  • 1994 - Disney releases the film Aladdin on laserdisc in the US, for US$30-50.
  • 1994 - Disney releases the film Aladdin on laserdisc in Japan, for 5974 Yen.
  • 2001 - Disney releases the Touchstone Pictures live-action feature film Big Trouble to theaters in the US.
  • 2001 - The city of Marceline, Missouri, begins a three-day celebration of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Walt Disney.
  • 2005 - Disney releases the film Lilo & Stitch 2: Stitch Has a Glitch on videocassette and DVD in Brazil.
  • 2010 - The ABC TV network premieres the Detroit 1-8-7 TV show.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1956 - Production of 1957 Corvettes begins.
  • 2002 - In Effingham, Illinois, the Funfest show is held at Mid America Designs, over two days. 6800 Corvettes and 30,000 people attend. The 2003 Corvette raffle is won by Ken Arbeeny, raising about US$300,000 for the National Corvette Museum. 1953 Corvette VIN #3 is on display.
  • 2003 - At Le Circuit Mont-Tremblant in Mont-Tremblant, Quebec, Canada, the 6 Heures du Circuit Mont-Tremblant race is held, round ten of the Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series. Finishing 2nd in GTS and 12th overall is the #38 Georgian Bay Motorsports Corvette, driven by John Holtom, Stu Hayner, and Ted Martin.
  • 2003 - At Le Circuit Mont-Tremblant in Mont-Tremblant, Quebec, Canada, the Mont-Tremblant 250 race is held, round eight of the Grand-Am Cup series. Finishing 3rd in GSI class and 3rd overall is the Powell Motorsport #11 Corvette Z06, driven by Devon Powell and Doug Goad.

World War II history:

  • 1938 - (0200 hours) British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain replies to Czech President Eduard Benes saying the British-French proposal is the only way to avoid war, that the Czech reply places full responsibility for war on the Czechs, and that Britain would not fight for Czechoslovakia. The Czech government decides to capitulate to German demands.
  • 1938 - Winston Churchill warns of the futility of appeasing Adolf Hitler: "The belief that security can be obtained by throwing a small state to the wolves is a fatal delusion.".
  • 1939 - US President Franklin Roosevelt calls for Congress to repeal the 1937 Neutrality Act, with its prohibition of the export of arms and munitions to belligerent powers.
  • 1939 - The Soviet Government informs the Finnish Government that the Russian Navy has mined eastern Gulf of Finland, to protect the entrance to Kronstadt.
  • 1939 - The German news agency reports the Polish port of Gydnia has been renamed Gotenhafen.
  • 1939 - France completes a twenty-day general mobilization, with six million men ready for action.
  • 1939 - French Premier Édouard Daladier tells the French people that Germany has already printed maps showing the dismemberment of France.
  • 1939 - (1330 hours) In Bucharest, Rumania, six Iron Guards assassinate Prime Minister Armand Calinescu. This is intended as a prelude to a Nazi uprising, but is quickly stopped by police. Nine men are captured and executed before midnight.
  • 1940 - Over the past 17 days, British aircraft have sunk 12.5 percent of 1865 German transport vessels preparing for an invasion of England.
  • 1940 - British submarine HMS Tuna sinks captured Norwegian cargo ship Tirranna in the Gironde Estuary off Bordeaux, as it attempts to run the British blockade, killing 87 of 292 on board.
  • 1944 - In Italy, Canadian forces reach the height of San Fortunato Ridge.
  • 1944 - German forces begin a second V-2 rocket offensive, on European targets, mainly Antwerp, Belgium, plus ten others.
  • 1944 - Allied forces enter Rimini in Italy.
  • 1949 - Control of Western Germany passes from the Allied Military Government to a supervised West German democracy.
  • 2004 - Saint Kitts issues five postage stamps marking the 60th anniversary of D-Day.
  • 2005 - Tuvalu issues eight postage stamps marking the 60th anniversary of VE Day.
  • 2012 - France issues a postage stamp of Camp des Milles, a World War II Internment Camp.

Video game history:

  • 1991 - NEC releases the NEC PC Engine Duo video game system in Japan. This combines the PC Engine with the CD-ROM2 in one case, and extra memory for the Super CD format.
  • 1991 - NEC releases the NEC PC Engine LT handheld console game system, with 4-inch screen, built-in speakers, and HuCard CD support.
  • 1992 - In Tokyo, Japan, Jeff Hansen of the US defeats Yuichi Suyama of Japan. to become the World Nintendo Champion.
  • 1993 - Sega Enterprises announces it would base its next-genertion video game system on a Hitachi 32-bit processor, with sound chips from Yamaha, and circuitry for video images from JVC.
  • 2000 - Enix releases the Dragon Warrior I & II Remix video game for the Game Boy Color in the US.
  • 2004 - Ubisoft releases the Star Wars Trilogy: Apprentice of the Force video game for the Game Boy Advance in the US.
  • 2004 - LucasArts releases the Star Wars: Battlefront video game for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox in the US.
  • 2004 - Namco releases the Katamari Damacy video game for the PlayStation 2 in the US.
  • 2004 - Capcom releases the Mega Man X Command Mission video game for the PlayStation 2 and GameCube in the US.
  • 2004 - Activision releases the X-Men Legends video game for the PlayStation 2, Xbox, and GameCube in the US.
  • 2004 - Square Enix releases the Final Fantasy XI: The Chains of Promathia expansion pack for the PlayStation 2 in the US.
  • 2020 - Microsoft agrees to buy video game holding company ZeniMax Media, including Bethesda Softworks and their following subsidiaries for US$7.5 billion, in what is the biggest and most expensive takeover in the history of the video game industry.

Swedish history:

  • 1974 - The Stockholmia '74 international stamp exhibition is held.

Canadian coin history:

  • 1995 - The Minister of Public Works and Government Services announces at the Metro Toronto Zoo that the new $2 coin will feature a polar bear on the reverse. The design chosen was created by artist Brent Townsend.

USA coin history:

  • 1796 - Philadelphia Mint begins production of gold quarter eagles.
  • 1951 - Congress authorizes Booker T. Washington / George Washington Carver commemorative half dollar.
  • 1987 - A bill is introduced in the House of Representatives calling for the modernizing of circulating coinage designs.
  • 2010 - The US Mint officially launches the 2010 Grand Canyon National Park quarter dollar in Williams, Arizona.

Sports history:

  • 1906 - New York Yankees' first baseman Hal Chase's 22 put-outs ties record.
  • 1929 - First legal forward pass in Canadian senior football thrown (Calgary).
  • 1934 - Saint Louis Cardinals' pitcher Paul Dean no-hits Brooklyn Dodgers, 3-0.
  • 1951 - Emil Zatopek runs 15km in record 44:54.6.
  • 1955 - Rocky Marciano versus Archie Moore in heavyweight championship fight; Marciano wins in 9th round.
  • 1956 - New York Yankees set dubious record, stranding 20 men on base; Mickey Mantle hits a 500-foot plus homer but Boston Red Sox win 13-9 in Fenway Park.
  • 1964 - Constellation (US) beats Sovereign (England) in 20th America's Cup.
  • 1964 - Cincinnati Reds' Chico Ruiz steals home, beats Philadelphia Phillies 1-0. Philadelphia Phillies start a ten-game losing streak that gives the Saint Louis Cardinals the pennant.
  • 1970 - ABC-TV debuts Monday Night Football, with Howard Cosell, Don Meredith and Keith Jackson. The Cleveland Browns beat the New York Jets 31-21.
  • 1970 - Oakland Athletics' Vida Blue no-hits Minnesota Twins, 6-0.
  • 1971 - American League approves Washington Senators' move to Arlington (Texas Rangers).
  • 1973 - New York Mets go into first place (at .500) after trailing 12.5 games.
  • 1973 - Nate Archibald signs seven-year contract with NBA's Kansas City Kings for US$450,000.
  • 1980 - Los Angeles Rams' Johnnie Johnson scores a 99-yard interception.
  • 1980 - Richard Todd of the New York Jets completes 42 passes in a game (NFL record).
  • 1981 - Steve Carlton strikes out National League record 3,118th (Andre Dawson).
  • 1982 - 2,251 turn out to see the Montreal Expos play the New York Mets at Shea Stadium.
  • 1982 - New Jersey Devils beat New York Rangers 3-2 in exhibition; first hockey in Meadowlands (New Jersey).
  • 1982 - NFL players begin a 57-day strike.
  • 1986 - Miami Dolphins' Dan Marino passes for six touchdowns versus New York Jets (51-45).
  • 1986 - New York Jets beat Miami Dolphins 51-45 in overtime; record 884 passing yards.
  • 1986 - New Orleans Saints' Mel Gray returns kickoff 101 yards for a touchdown.
  • 1990 - Faye Vincent turns down Chicago White Sox bid to reinstate Minnie Minoso, 68, (so he can play in six decades) because it is a publicity stunt.
  • 1990 - Oakland Athletics' Bob Welch becomes the first 25-game winner in ten years.
  • 1990 - Pittsburgh Pirates' player Bobby Bond is second to hit 30 home runs and steal 50 bases in a season.
  • 2001 - Sports return to New York for the first time since the terrorist attacks with the New York Mets/Atlanta Braves game at Shea Stadium. Mike Piazza hits a two-run home run in the 8th inning off Steve Karsay to win the game 3-2.
  • 2008 - The United States claims the 2008 Ryder Cup golf trophy with a 16.5-11.5 victory over Europe.
  • 2008 - Jose Molina hits the last home run in the 85-year history of Yankee Stadium in New York, to give the New York Yankees a 7-3 win over the Baltimore Orioles. The stadium will be demolished, replaced by a new US$1.3 billion Yankee Stadium across the way from the exisiting facility.
  • 2022 - At Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Arizona Diamondbacks beats Los Angeles Dodgers by score 6-1.
  • 2022 - At Petco Park in San Diego, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: San Diego Padres beats Saint Louis Cardinals by score 1-0.
  • 2022 - At RingCentral Coliseum, Oakland, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Oakland Athletics beats Seattle Mariners by score 2-1.
  • 2022 - At Coors Field in Denver, Colorado, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: San Francisco Giants beats Colorado Rockies by score 6-1.
  • 2022 - At Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Kansas City Royals beats Minnesota Twins by score 5-2.

  • 1897 - NY Sun runs famous "Yes, Virginia there is a Santa Claus," editorial.
  • 1931 - Britain goes off the gold standard.
  • 1934 - Typhoon strikes Honshu Island Japan, kills 4,000.
  • 1937 - J.R.R. Tolkien publishes "The Hobbit".
  • 1949 - People's Republic of China proclaimed.
  • 2008 - In Islamabad, Pakistan, a suicide truck bomb kills at least 54 people at the Marriott Hotel. At least 270 people were injured in the blast.
  • 2008 - Nearly 13,000 children in China are hospitalised after drinking the milk of the Sanlu Group containing the industrial chemical melamine; four have died. Melamine was first found in baby milk powder made by the Sanlu Group.
