  • 1994 - The first court hearing on the Microsoft consent decree is held.
  • 1997 - Umax Computer unveils the J700 Macintosh-compatible computer. It features Mac OS 8, 233 MHz PowerPC 604e processor, 24 MB RAM, 2 GB hard drive, 24X CD-ROM drive, 10 Base-T Ethernet networking card. Price is about US$2000.
  • 1997 - At the Embedded Systems Conference in San Jose, California, Microsoft releases the Windows CE 2.0 operating system. It includes support for 32-bit color and 16-gray-scale displays, TrueType fonts, Ethernet connectivity, and support for more processors. Code-name during development was Jupiter.
  • 2001 - Apple Computer releases the Mac OS X 10.1 operating system. New features include DVD movie playback, ability to burn DVD RW discs from Finder, and faster launch of programs. Upgrade price is US$19.99 from Apple (free until October 31 in stores); full package costs US$129. Code-name during development was Puma

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1934 - The Mickey Mouse film Mickey Plays Papa is released to theaters. Pluto also appears.
  • 1938 - Walt Disney Productions is reorganized to include three subsidiary companies: Walt Disney Enterprises, Liled Realty and Investment Company, the Disney Film Recording Company. Walt and Lillian receive 45,000 shares apiece; Roy and Edna Disney receive 30,000 apiece.
  • 1938 - Fifty or sixty animators attend a 2.5-hour piano concert for The Sorcerer's Aprentice, with Walt Disney giving a running commentary on what the audience would see.
  • 1963 - The NBC TV network airs the Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color show, featuring The Horse Without a Head, part one.
  • 1968 - The NBC TV network airs the Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color show, featuring Boomerang, The Dog of Many Talents, part two.
  • 1974 - The NBC TV network airs The Wonderful World of Disney show, entitled Shokee, the Everglades Panther.
  • 1984 - Disney releases the Touchstone Pictures live-action feature film Country to theaters in the US.
  • 1991 - The Studio Showcase attraction opens at the Disney-MGM Studios Theme Park at Walt Disney World.
  • 1993 - Walt Disney Home Video releases the film Beauty and the Beast on videocassette (VHS) for US$25, and on laserdisc for US$29.95 (CAV) and US$49.95 (CLV).
  • 1995 - Buena Vista Pictures releases the Walt Disney Pictures live-action feature film The Big Green to theaters in the USA.
  • 1995 - Disney releases the film The Lion King on laserdisc in Japan, for 4841 Yen.
  • 1995 - Disney releases the animated film compilation Cartoon Classics: Celebrate with Mickey on laserdisc in Japan, for 3900 Yen. It includes: Mickey's Circus, Foul Hunting, Beach Picnic, Mickey's Birthday Party, Wide Open Spaces, Man's Best Friend.
  • 1995 - Disney releases the animated film compilation Cartoon Classics: Mickey's Jungle Trouble on laserdisc in Japan, for 3900 Yen. It includes: Mickey's Elephant, Tea for Two Hundred, Frank Duck Brings 'Em Back Alive, Three Blind Mousketeers, Straight Shooters, Tiger Trouble.
  • 1995 - Disney releases the animated film compilation Cartoon Classics: Mickey's Summer Madness on laserdisc in Japan, for 3900 Yen. It includes: Mickey Down Under, Mickey and the Seal, Mickey's Trailer, Donald's Golf Game, How to Play Baseball, Alpine Climbers.
  • 2000 - Disney generally releases the Walt Disney Pictures live-action feature film Remember the Titans to theaters in the USA. The film cost US$30 million to produce.
  • 2003 - Disney subsidiary Buena Vista Datacasting introduces the video-on-demand service MovieBeam in three cities in the United States: Spokane, Washington, Jacksonville, Florida, and Salt Lake City, Utah. The service lets users download and store films for up to 24 hours on a television set-top device. Rental of the device costs US$6.99 per month, with film costs of US$1.99-3.99 per title.
  • 2005 - Disney Electronics introduces Disney Mix Sticks digital audio MP3/WMA players. The audio players can download music files or copy audio tracks from CDs. Storage capacity is 128 MB, enough to hold about 60 songs. Also included are a USB 2.0 connector and SD/MMC card slot. Price is expected to be about US$50 in October. Prerecorded memory cards, called Mix Clips, can be purchased for about the same price as a CD.
  • 2006 - Disney introduces annual passports for use at Hong Kong Disneyland.
  • 2006 - (to October 31) Halloween Time is first celebrated at Disneyland.
  • 2009 - Hyperion Books releases the first fictional Richard Castle crime novel, Heat Wave, written by Nikki Heat.
  • 2013 - The ABC TV network premieres the Betrayal TV show.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1953 - Chevrolet makes a nine-page news release about the Corvette.
  • 1979 - At the Greater Southwest Raceway between Dallas and Fort Worth, Texas, the SCCA National Solo II Championships are held, over two days.
    • Finishing 1st in Class B Stock is the #3 Corvette convertible, driven by Steve Eberman.
    • Finishing 2nd in Class B Stock is the #13 Corvette convertible, driven by Mike Martin.
    • Finishing 3rd in Class B Stock is the Corvette driven by George Saxton.
    • Finishing 1st in Class B Prepared is the Corvette driven by Larry Park.
    • Finishing 2nd in Class B Prepared is the Corvette driven by Jack McDonald.

  • 2021 - CNBC TV airs Jay Leno's Garage, title "Don't Blink", showing astronaut Dave Scott's Apollo 15 Corvette.

World War II history:

  • 1938 - (1200 hours) In Germany, a two-day conference begins, held by Adolf Hitler, Italy's Premier Benito Mussolini, Britain's Neville Chamberlain, and France's Édouard Daladier, to discuss German demands on Czechoslovakian territory. Hitler renounces plans to destroy Czechoslovakia; Chamberlain and Daladier agree to allow the German annexation of the Sudetenland.
  • 1939 - (0800 hours) Off Bergen, Norway, Norwegian freighter Takstaas is stopped by a German submarine and sunk.
  • 1939 - Off Norway, Norwegian steamship Solaas strikes a mine and sinks.
  • 1939 - Norwegian cargo ship Jern, en route to Great Britain, is stopped by a German submarine and blown up with dynamite.
  • 1939 - The remaining Polish government in Warsaw capitulates.
  • 1939 - The Presidium of the Supreme Soviet ratifies the Soviet-Estonian pact of mutual assistance.
  • 1939 - Russian Premier and Foreign Commissar Vyacheslaff Molotoff and German Foreign Minister Joachim von Ribbentrop issue a joint statement that there is no need to continue hostilities. If Britain and France continue, Germany and Russia would consult about necessary steps to take.
  • 1939 - Nine Blackburn Skua fighters are launched from the British carrier Ark Royal in Norwegian waters, to attack three German Dornier Do-18 flying boats. one is shot down, the first German plane downed by a British pilot in the war.
  • 1939 - Romania strengthens its defence forces on the Bessarabian border facing the Soviet Union.
  • 1939 - About 10 British Hampden bombers attack two German destroyers near Heligoland. The ships are not hit. Two German Me 109 planes are shot down, at a cost of five British planes.
  • 1939 - (1420 hours) Five Heinkel He-111 planes from the German mainland attack the British carrier Ark Royal between Norway and Britain. Anti-aircraft fire forces four planes to jettison their bombs in the sea, but the fifth dives in to drop its 2000-pound bomb. The ship turns to avoid it, but smoke from the carrier's funnel leads the pilot to believe he scored a direct hit.
  • 1939 - Captain Hans Langsdorff of the pocket-battleship Admiral Graf Spee receives orders to attack Allied merchant shipping.
  • 1941 - Adolf Hitler issues an order regarding the future of Leningrad. The entire city and all inhabitants are to be "wiped from the face of the earth".
  • 1942 - For the second time, Japanese submarine I-25 launches a floatplane off the coast of Oregon, bombing the coast.
  • 2002 - State prosecutors of Dortmund, Germany, charge eleven former German officers with the murder of 5,000 Italian prisoners-of-war on the Greek island of Cephalonia during World War II. The case was re-opened based on new evidence from East German Stasi police files and war diaries.

Video game history:

  • 1983 - Atari dumps 14-20 truckloads of game cartridges and other computer equipment in a landfill in Alamogordo, New Mexico. 5-6 million cartridges of ET: The Extraterrestrial are included.
  • 1995 - Sony launches the PlayStation in Europe, for 299 UK pounds sterling.
  • 1996 - Nintendo releases the Nintendo 64 video game system in North America. Price is US$199.95.
  • 1996 - Nintendo releases the Super Mario 64 video game for the Nintendo 64 in the US.
  • 1996 - Nintendo releases the Pilotwings 64 video game for the Nintendo 64 in the US.
  • 1999 - Activision releases the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater video game for the PlayStation in the US.
  • 2003 - Midway Sports releases the NFL Blitz Pro video game for the PlayStation 2, Xbox, and GameCube in the US.
  • 2009 - Square Enix releases the Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days video game for the Nintendo DS in the USA.
  • 2017 - Studio MDHR releases the Cuphead video game for the Xbox One in the USA.

Swedish history:

  • 1306 - Duke Erik and brother Duke Valdemar with guards take their brother King Birger, his wife Märta, Bishop Nils Kettilson and many others from the royal estate at Håtung, imprisoning them in the dungeons at Nyköping Castle. King Birger's son Magnus is saved by a servant, taking him to King Erik Menved in Denmark.
  • 1312 - At a double wedding ceremony in Oslo, Norway, Duke Erik marries Princess Ingeborg, daughter of King Håkon, and Duke Valdemar marries Princess Ingeborg Eriksdotter, niece of King Håkon.
  • 1568 - King Erik is seized in Stockholm.
  • 1650 - The Riksdag agrees with Queen Kristina, granting Karl Gustav title of His Royal Highness, the Prince of Sweden.

Canadian coin history:

  • 1992 - A Royal proclamation specifies that the design of a 1992 25c nickel coin and 25c silver coin have "1867-1992" on the obverse, and "Quebec" on the reverse.
  • 2009 - Former Canadian Olympian Michael Peca unveils in Ottawa a circulating 25-cent coin to honor the 2002 Olympic gold medal in Men's Hockey. 22 million coins are to be made, 3 million with red color.

USA coin history:

  • 1838 - The US Mint begins production of Seated Liberty quarter dollars for circulation.
  • 1938 - Mint Director Nellie Tayloe Ross receives from the Philadelphia Mint three experimental Jefferson 5-cent coins, forwarding one to the president and one to the Treasury Secretary.
  • 1981 - US Senate confirms Elizabeth Jones as chief engraver of the US Mint.
  • 2010 - The House of Representatives passes H.R. 6162, the "Coin Modernization, Oversight and Continuity Act of 2010".

Sports history:

  • 1793 - Tennis is first mentioned in an English sporting magazine.
  • 1879 - National League owners' meeting in Buffalo, New York adopt the reserve clause, giving each team exclusive rights to their players.
  • 1890 - First professional baseball game, New York Metropolitans beat the Washington Nationals 4-2 in five innings at the Polo Grounds in New York City.
  • 1892 - First night football game played (Mansfield, Pennsylvania).
  • 1911 - New York Yankees steal 15 bases and get 13 walks, beating Saint Louis Browns 16-12; with a major-league record six stolen bases in one inning.
  • 1915 - Philadelphia Phillies clinch their first pennant.
  • 1920 - Babe Ruth sets home run season record at 54 runs.
  • 1927 - Babe Ruth ties Major League Baseball record by hitting grand slams in consecutive games.
  • 1928 - New York Yankees (17) Detroit Tigers (28) set 9-inning hit record (45)-Detroit Tigers win 19-10.
  • 1930 - First Canadian football game played under lights, Hamilton-UBC.
  • 1941 - Heavyweight Champ Joe Louis knocks out Lou Nova in 6 rounds.
  • 1946 - First time National League pennant ends in a tie (Saint Louis Cardinals and Brooklyn Dodgers).
  • 1946 - Al Couture knockouts Ralph Walton in Lewiston Maine in 10.5 seconds.
  • 1946 - Los Angeles (previously Cleveland) Rams play first NFL game in Los Angeles, California.
  • 1951 - First color telecast of football game on network, Philadelphia (CBS).
  • 1953 - American League approves Baltimore group purchase of Saint Louis Browns for US$2,475,000.
  • 1954 - Willie Mays makes his famous over-the-shoulder catch of Vic Wertz' 460-foot drive.
  • 1957 - New York Giants play and lose their last game at Polo Grounds (9-1 to Pittsburgh Pirates).
  • 1963 - Saint Louis Cardinals' Stan Musial's final game, gets his 3,630th hit.
  • 1963 - Houston Colt .45s' John Paciorek goes three for three in his only game.
  • 1965 - Ralph Boston of the US sets long jump record at 27 feet 4.75 inches.
  • 1965 - Saint Louis Cardinals' Charlie Johnson passes for six touchdowns vs Cleveland Browns (49-13).
  • 1968 - Chuck Latourette, sets NFL record 47.7 yard punt return average (three punts).
  • 1969 - 7th Mayor's Trophy Game, New York Mets beat New York Yankees 7-6.
  • 1969 - Steve O'Neal of New York Jets, kicks longest NFL punt; 98 yards versus Denver Broncos.
  • 1973 - Baltimore Orioles pull their 5th triple play (5-4-3 versus Detroit Tigers).
  • 1973 - Insurance industry announces auto racers get into more highway accidents.
  • 1976 - San Francisco Giants' John Montefusco no-hits Atlanta Braves, 9-0.
  • 1977 - Muhammad Ali wins a unanimous, 15-round decision over Earnie Shavers.
  • 1983 - Oakland Athletics' Mike Warren no-hits Chicago White Sox, 3-0.
  • 1986 - Chicago Cubs' Greg Maddux defeats Philadelphia Phillies' Mike Maddux (first rookie brothers).
  • 1987 - New York Yankees' Don Mattingly hits Major league record sixth grand slam of the year.
  • 1988 - Florence Griffith Joyner of USA sets the 200m woman's record (21.34).
  • 1991 - US beats Europeans 14.5 to 13.5 to capture the Ryder's cup.
  • 2004 - Major League Baseball announces the Montreal Expos will move to Washington D.C. in time for the 2005 season.
  • 2021 - At Honda Center in Anaheim, California, USA, NHL pre-season game: Arizona Coyotes beats Anaheim Ducks by score 4-1.
  • 2021 - At Scotiabank Saddledrome in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, NHL pre-season game: Seattle Kraken beats Calgary Flames by score 4-3.
  • 2021 - At United Center in Chicago, Illinois, USA, NHL pre-season game: Detroit Red Wings beats Chicago Blackhawks by score 4-3.

  • 1951 - S B Nicholson discovers 12th satellite of Jupiter.

  • 1977 - Soviet space station Salyut 6 is launched into Earth orbit.

  • 2004 - Asteroid 4179 Toutatis crosses path of Earth within 1.5 million km.
  • 2004 - After taking off from Mojave, California, the White Knight carrier plane launches SpaceShipOne rocket plane, which flies into space (62 miles high) and back.
  • 2011 - China successfully launches an experimental craft, Tiangong 1 meaning "Heavenly Palace", from a remote site in the Gobi Desert. The unmanned space lab is part of a program to build a permanent manned space station.

  • 1915 - A hurricane claims 275 human deaths in the Mississippi Delta.
  • 2003 - Hurricane Juan lands at Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada as a category two storm, killing two directly and five indirectly.

USA history:

  • 1789 - First US Congress adjourns.

  • 2005 - John G. Roberts, Junior is confirmed and sworn in as Chief Justice of the United States.
  • 2008 - Wachovia Corp, fourth largest US bank, agrees to sell most of its assets to Citigroup Inc for US$2.16 billion in a deal brokered by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp.
  • 2008 - The American Federal Reserve announces it will lend a further US$620 billion to other national central banks.
  • 2008 - Morgan Stanley sells 21 percent of itself to Japan's Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group, for US$3 billion, plus a further $6 billion of convertible preferred stock.
  • 2008 - The U.S. House of Representatives votes 228-to-205 to reject a US$700 billion bailout plan for the financial industry.
  • 2008 - The Dow Jones industrial average posts its largest point decline ever, 778 points, 6.98 percent of total value. The benchmark Standard & Poor's 500 Index has its worst day since the 1987 crisis with an 8.8 percent drop, or 106.59 points. The Nasdaq Composite Index loses 199.61 points, or 9.14 percent. Latin American stocks tumble 13 percent, their biggest decline in more than a decade. Gold price jumps up, and US crude oil drops $10 to close at US$96.37 per barrel. World stocks, as measured by the MSCI's world index, lose about $1.7 trillion for the day.
