Vancouver Island, part of British Columbia, Canada, is mid-way along the west coast of North America.
Most pipe organs on Vancouver Island are in and around Victoria, the capital city of British Columbia, at the southern tip of the island on the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Most of the early instruments here came on sailing ships around Cape Horn from England.
Fort Victoria was founded in 1843 by James Douglas of the Hudson's Bay Company when it became apparent that their Fort Vancouver, at the mouth of the Columbia River, would soon be on the wrong side of the Canada-USA border, then under negotiation.
