Jeff Lederman has been a wildlife rehabilitator since the 1980’s. Working his way from New Mexico to British Columbia, he has worked at many wildlife facilities across the US and Canada. Jeff’s extensive experience includes indigenous North American species ranging from birds of prey to marine mammals. Studying alternative medicine all the while, Jeff was preparing for the day when he would build his own centre. In the Spring of 1997, he realized that ambition when he founded Island Wildlife Natural Care Centre on Salt Spring Island. Jeff has published articles in the Journal of American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association, Homeopathy Today, the publication of the National Centre for Homeopathy, has received a grant from the Homeopathic Community Council and been awarded for environmental stewardship in the Gulf Islands. Considered to be among the top seal rehabilitators in North America, Jeff’s use of integrative medicine for wildlife places him in a unique position.

Jackie Ballerone started volunteering for the Island Wildlife in 1998 and has since worn many hats, including Board President, administrator and special projects manager. She also works closely in the development and administration of the Centre’s internship program. Jackie holds a degree in marketing and has an extensive background as a marketing and communications specialist in both public and private sectors. Her passion for wild animals began in the 1970’s when she worked as a volunteer for Greenpeace trying to stop the Harp Seal slaughter in eastern Canada.

Marielle Bonnet - Since graduating from the National Veterinary School of Nantes, France in 1996, Marielle has pursued her passion for marine mammals. After studying fur seals in Antarctica for her Masters Degree, she participated in various conservation projects for the protection of Monk Seals in Hawaii as well as in Mauritania, Greece and Turkey. Marielle rehabilitated seals at the Seal Rescue and Research Center in the Netherlands for 3 years and has been seal team leader at Island Wildlife for 6 years.

Mike Grandbois, an experienced bird of prey curator and falconer, is an enthusiastic naturalist with a particular interest in ornithology and herpetology. Holding a degree in environmental studies and a diploma in resource management, Mike heads up Island Wildlife's avian and terrestrial mammal rehabilitation program. As an avid conservationist, Mike's passion for the welfare of our wildlife is strongly reflected in both his professional and personal life. When he is not tending to his wild patients at the centre, he and his binoculars can be found birding all around Salt Spring Island.
Derrick Milton D.V.M., owner of The Gulf Islands Veterinary Clinic has been the consulting veterinarian for Island Wildlife since the centre’s inception. Dr. Milton received his veterinary education from Ontario Veterinary College. Derrick is also an accomplished, professional musician, who can be frequently found at our neighborhood pub (performing of course).
