Review: Amelia St. Bistro is located on a nice quiet side street in an old character home. The restaurant occupies the entire house, enabling it to consist of a main dining area with a cute loft with a few extra tables. The menu consists of a wide variety of choices, although none that are really designed for strict vegans. There is everything from pastas to lamb, to polenta on the menu. On this occasion I had the squash soup with mussels, cornmeal crusted halibut with roasted garlic mashed potatoes and roasted veg and the blueberry sorbet to top things off. The soup was wonderful and I was delighted to hear that it wasn't a creamy soup since I am lactose intolerant. The soup was simple, not cluttered with a lot of additions that hide the taste of squash and the mussels added a unique twist to the soup. The halibut, although slightly over done, was delicious. The potatoes were perfect. Not too much garlic and not mashed to the consistancy of instant potatoes. The veg consisted of carrots, beets and zuchinni, that were roasted until tender yet still crisp. The highlight of the meal was definitely the dessert! I am quite partial to blueberries, so I am somewhat biased, but this was by far, the best blueberry sorbet I had ever had. Intense flavour with bits of seeds and skin, so you know that they used real blueberries, and not just extracts. Good food and great atmosphere, all you need to do is add your own great company!
