Location and Recovery of Ocean Racing Yacht "Panache IV"

On February 23, 1995, the 15 ton ocean racing yacht "Panache IV" sank off Turn Point (Stuart Island, WA). Western Subsea, under contract to the insurance underwriter, located the vessel at a depth of 270 meters. The waters off Turn Point are known for their treacherous currents. Water flows at up to 100,000 m3/sec. in this area with vertical currents of up to 1.5 knots.

Western Subsea's STRIDER system, an integrated suite of subsea survey equipment, was used to determine the vessel's precise position on bottom. The 15 meter vessel was then brought to the surface using heavy lift gear.

A technical article relating to this project is featured in Sea Technology magazine's February, 1997 issue (Compass Publications, Arlington, VA).

Sidescan Imagery

Typical sidescan images of subsea artifacts are obtained by Western Subsea using Imagenex Technology Corp.'s equipment. The vessel shown is a large 100m long barge sitting on the sea floor. A wire cable runs across its bow.
