  • South Korea's Ban Ki-moon becomes the new United Nations Secretary-General, replacing Kofi Annan. [38]
  • Hong Kong's new smoking law starts. From this day onwards, smoking is prohibited in clubs, karaoke bars, restaurants, and all public places. [38]

  • In Tampa, Florida, USA a 200-pound chunk of ice streaks through the sky and lands in the back seat of a Ford Mustang. [521]

  • In Scottsdale, Arizona, the Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction is held, over six days. A 1967 silver Corvette coupe, the last Sting Ray built, sells for US$600,000. [8]

  • US investment bank Merrill Lynch announces 2006 profit of US$10.4 billion, the most successful year in its history. [132.86]
  • Comet McNaught, the brightest comet to appear in over 40 years, becomes visible over the Southern Hemisphere. [38]
  • The strongest storm in the UK for 17 years kills 14 people, and Germany sees the worst storm since 1999 with 13 deaths. Hurricane Kyrill causes at least 44 deaths across 20 countries in Western Europe. Other losses include the Container Ship MSC Napoli destroyed by the storm off the coast of Devon, England. [38]

  • Israel releases US$100 million in frozen assets to President Mahmoud Abbas of the Palestinian National Authority in order to bolster the president's position. [38]

  • A bombing in a market in Baghdad, Iraq, kills 88 people. [38]

  • In Giles County, Virginian, USA a meteor sighting is followed by a thundering tremor. [521]

  • The President of Israel, Moshe Katsav, takes a temporary leave of absence due to a sex scandal. [38]

  • A battle between insurgents and U.S.-backed Iraqi troops kills 300 suspected terrorists in Najaf, Iraq. [38]

  • State of Emergency is declared in Indonesia after 'El Nino'-like flooding. [38]
  • A truck bombing in a crowded Baghdad, Iraq, market kills at least 135 people and injures a further 339 others. [38]
  • The deadly H5N1 strain of bird flu is found at a Bernard Matthews turkey farm in Suffolk, United Kingdom. [38]

  • Meteors and fireballs are reported in several states in the Midwestern USA. [521]

  • HSBC announces it is setting aside US$10 billion to cover bad loans in its US mortgage division. [132.88]

  • Bolivian President Evo Morales nationalizes the Vinto tin smelter, claiming the smelter was fraudulently taken from the Bolivian people in 1999. [800.40]

  • In a national referendum, Portuguese voters agree to legalise abortion. [38]

  • An armed gunman shoots and kills five people at the Trolley Square Mall in Salt Lake City, Utah, before being killed by the police, bringing the evening's rampage death toll to six. [38]

  • North Korea agrees to shut down its nuclear facilities in Yongbyon by April 14 as a first step towards complete denuclearization, receiving in return energy aid equivalent to 50,000 tons of heavy fuel oil. [38] [800.28]
  • Taiwan opposition leader Ma Ying-jeou resigns as the chairman of the Kuomintang party after being indicted on charges of embezzlement; Ma also announces his candidacy for the 2008 presidential election. [38]

  • In Ohio, USA, a meteor streaks across the sky, creating a sonic boom. [521]

  • A large fire causes 26 fatalities in the Regi care center in Alsunga, Latvia. [38]
  • In Banchola village, Rajasthan, India, three people are killed and four injured when a meteorite falls from the sky and hits them. [521]

  • A 4.2kg 20cm diameter meteorite falls on a beach in Rio Hato, Panama. [521]

  • The European Space Agency confirms Rosetta's successful Mars trajectory fly-by. [38]
  • The 79th Academy Awards ceremony, hosted by Ellen DeGeneres, takes place at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood. The Departed wins Best Picture. [38]

  • The International Court of Justice finds Serbia guilty of failing to prevent genocide in the Srebrenica massacre, but clears it of direct responsibility and complicity in the case. [38]

  • Garuda Indonesia Flight 200, a Boeing 737-400, crashes at Yogyakarta on the Indonesian island of Java, killing many on board. [38]

  • Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert admits that Israel had planned an attack on Lebanon in the event of kidnapped soldiers on the border, months before Hezbollah carried out its kidnapping. [38]

  • BBC journalist Alan Johnston disappears in Gaza City, Palestine. [38]

  • In the Canadian province of Québec, the Liberal Party wins a National Assembly election with 48 seats out of 125 and forms a minority government. [38]

  • Prime Minister of Latvia Aigars Kalvitis and Prime Minister of Russia Mikhail Fradkov finally signs a border treaty between Latvia and Russia. [38]

  • Pilots of a Chilean passenger jet approaching the airport at Auckland, New Zealand report seeing flaming debris fall past their aircraft several kilometres away, falling at the speed of sound. [521]
