  • US scientists display close-up photos of Mars from Mariner IV. [1]

  • Zond 3 launched to fly by Moon, enters solar orbit. [1] [5]

  • Pakistan, Iran, and Turkey sign Regional Co-Operation pact. [1]
July 23
  • US President Lyndon Johnson signs into law the Coinage Act of 1965. Some provisions:
    • authorizes re-opening the San Francisco facility as a coinage production facility,
    • the composition of the dime and quarter dollar are changed from 90 percent silver and 10 percent copper to 91.67 percent copper and 8.33 percent nickel (two outer layers of 75 percent copper, bonded to core of pure copper),
    • the composition of the half dollar is changed from 90 percent silver and 10 percent copper to 40 percent silver and 60 percent copper (two outer layers of 80 percent silver, bonded to a core of 21.5 percent silver),
    • allows striking of 1964-dated and 1965-dated coins into 1966,
    • suspends production of any silver dollar coins for five years,
    • suspends use of mint marks on coinage for five years.

  • Morley Safer sends first Vietnam report indicating US is losing war. [1]

  • Singapore gains independence from Malaysia. [1]

  • Disneyland (Ahaneim, California) welcomes its 50-millionth guest, Mary Adams. [6]

  • The Beatles play before a capacity crowd of 55,000 at Shea Stadium in New York, setting a record for the largest concert audience to date. [457]

  • Gemini 5 launched into Earth orbit (two astronauts). [1]
August 30
  • Section of Allalin glacier wipes out construction site at Mattmark Dam near Saas-Fee, Switzerland. [1]
August 31
  • The Aero Spacelines Super Guppy Aircraft makes its first flight. [5]
September 9
  • Tibet is made an autonomous region of China. [1]
September 12
  • Hurricane Betsy strikes Florida and Louisiana; kills 75. [1]
September 19
  • The fifth parliamentary elections take place in the Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany). The CDU/CSU gets 47.6% of the vote, the SPD 39.3%, and the FDP 9.5%. The governing coalition consists of the CDU/CSU and the FDP. Ludwig Erhard (CDU) is the chancellor. [37]

  • Lava flows kill at least 350 (Taal, Phillipines). [1]

  • Pope Paul VI becomes first Pope to visit Western Hemisphere (United Nations). [1]
  • USSR launches Luna 7; will crash land on Moon. [1]

  • The Beatles receive Member of the British Empire medals at Buckingham Palace. [1] [457]

  • In St. Louis, Missouri, construction is completed on the Gateway Arch, a 630-foot-high parabola of stainless steel. The arch was erected to commemorate President Thomas Jefferson's Louisiana Purchase of 1803. [1] [129]
  • Pope Paul VI proclaims Jews not collectively guilty for crucifixion. [1]
October 30
  • Fireworks explosions kill 50 in Cartagena, Colombia. [1]

  • Trackless trolley plunges into Nile River, drowning 74 (Cairo, Egypt). [1]
November 8
  • British Indian Ocean Territory is established, comprising Aldabra, Farquhar, and Des Roches islands from Seychelles, and the Chagos Island group from Mauritius. [1] [700.1135] [964.41]

  • The biggest power failure in U.S. history occurs as all of New York state, portions of seven neighboring states, and parts of eastern Canada are plunged into darkness. The blackout was caused by the tripping of a transmission line near Ontario, Canada. The cascading effect onto other transmission lines eventually takes down the entire Northeastern network. 30 million people in eight U.S. states and the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Quebec are affected by the blackout.   • In Great Britain, an act comes into force abolishing capital punishment. [55.31]
November 11
  • Rhodesia proclaims independence by Prime Minister Ian D Smith. [278.476]

  • Venera 2 launched by Soviet Union toward Venus. [1]
November 13
  • Cruise ship Yarmouth Castle, on an overnight cruise from Miami, Florida, to the Bahamas, burns and sinks off Bahamas, killing 87 of 545 passengers and crew. A fire broke out in an unoccupied cabin used for storage, quickly destroying the bridge, radio room, and some lifeboats. [1] [75.27] [94.50] [809.50]
  • Brazil introduces new monetary unit, the cruzeiro novo. [559.66]
November 15
  • At the Cherry Plaza Hotel in Orlando, Florida, Walt Disney, Roy Disney, and Florida Governor Hayden Burns make the first public announcement of plans to build a new Disney theme park near Orlando. (It will open in six years as Walt Disney World Resort.) [1] [6]
November 16
  • The Soviet Union launches the Venera 3 space probe, which becomes the first spacecraft to reach the surface of another planet (Venus). [1] [5]
November 26
  • France launches first satellite, 92 pounds (42kg) A1-capsule (Asterix), becoming third nation in space. [1] [707.169]
December 1
  • Airlift of refugees from Cuba to US begins. [1]
  • South Africa government says children of white fathers are white. [1]

  • USSR launches Luna 8; crashes on Moon. [1]

  • Two passenger planes collide above Danbury, Connecticut, USA; four die. [1]

  • Two trucks crash into a crowd of dancers in Sotouboua, Togo, killing 125. [1]

  • Pope Paul VI and Orthodox Patriarch Athenagoras I simultaneously lift mutual excommunications that led to split of the two churches in 1054. [1]

  • Nikolai Podgorny replaces Anastas Mikoyan as President of Presidium (USSR). [1]
