  • In Burma, a magnitude 6.5 earthquake occurs, about 100 kilometers southeast of Mandalay in the vicinity of Pagan, the ancient Burmese capital city. Over 2000 of the ancient monuments in the area were affected by the quake. [1] [53]

  • In Western Minnesota, a magnitude 4.6 earthquake occurs. Felt over northern Iowa, Minnesota, southeastern North Dakota, and eastern South Dakota. [53]

  • Saint Thomas and Prince Islands (Sao Tomé e Príncipe) gains independence. [278.835]

  • Soyuz 19 and Apollo 18 launched; rendezvous two days later. [1]
