  • The Oresund Bridge, connecting Sweden and Denmark, opens for traffic. [5]
July 2
  • Vicente Fox is elected President of Mexico, as candidate of the rightist PAN (National Action Party), ending 71 years of PRI (Institutional Revolutionary Party) rule. [21]
July 6
  • A barge and a tug towing it collide off Middletown, Rhode Island, USA, spilling 53,000 litres of oil in Narragansett Bay. [522]
July 10
  • EADS, the world's second largest aerospace group, is formed by the merger of Aérospatiale-Matra, DASA and CASA. [5]
  • In southern Nigeria, a leaking petroleum pipeline explodes, killing about 250 villagers who were scavenging gasoline. [21]
  • Bashar al-Assad is confirmed as Syria's leader in a national referendum. [21]

  • (to July 25) Israel's prime minister Ehud Barak and Palestinian Liberation Organization head Yasser Arafat meet at Camp David, but fail to reach a peace agreement. [21]
July 12
  • Microsoft releases Internet Explorer 5.5 for Windows. It adds improved support for Cascading Style Sheets, Synchronized Multimedia Integration Language, and dynamic HTML. [4]

  • Tokyo Disneyland welcomes its 250 millionth guest. [6]
July 15
  • Microsoft unveils its C# (C sharp) language, an extension of C++ adding XML web support, COM, and Windows API support. [4]

  • A pipe breaks from a Petrobras oil refinery spewing about 4 million litres of oil over two hours into the Barigui River near Curitiba. [522]

  • Alex Salmond resigns as the leader of the Scottish National Party. [21]
July 19
  • The first 15 women pass the test for service with weapons in the German army. [37]
  • Apple Computer begins shipping the first personal computers with standard dual processors, the Power Mac G4 with dual 450 or 500 MHz processors. [4]
July 21
  • (to July 23) G-8 Nations hold their 26th Annual Summit. Issues include AIDS, the 'digital divide', and halving world poverty by 2015. [21]
July 25
  • Air France Flight 4590, a Concorde aircraft, crashes into a hotel in Gonesse just after takeoff from Paris, killing all 109 aboard and four in the hotel. The jet hit runway debris, preventing a proper takeoff. [21] [254.14]

  • In Norstead, Newfoundland, Canada, near L'Anse aux Meadows, thirteen replica Viking longships from Sweden, Norway, and elsewhere arrive as part of a Grand Encampment Ceremony, in celebration of the 1000th anniversary of the arrival of Vikings in North America, and their establishment of a settlement. [7]
July 30
  • Venezuela's president Hugo Chávez is re-elected with 59 percent of the vote. [21]
August 1
  • An oil pipeline break in northern British Columbia, Canada spills about 1 million litres of crude oil into the Pine River near Chetwynd. [522]
August 8
  • Confederate submarine H.L. Hunley is raised to the surface after 136 years on the ocean floor. [21]
  • An unknown ship dumps oil off the South Florida coast, creating an oil slick covering 24km of beaches. [522]
August 12
  • The Russian submarine K-141 Kursk sinks in the Barents Sea, resulting in the deaths of all 118 men on board. [21]
August 14
  • Czar Nicholas II and his family are canonized by the synod of the Russian Orthodox Church. [21]
August 26
  • Enix releases the Dragon Quest VII video game for the PlayStation in Japan. First day sales total 1.8 million copies. [9]
August 27
  • The Ostankino Tower in Moscow, Russia, catches fire; three people are killed. [5] [21]
September 2
  • Kingston-registered Chinese cargo ship Double Brave collides with a barge being towed by a tugboat and sinks at Tanjung Po anchorage at the mouth of the Sarawak River in Malaysia, leaking about 135,000 litres of diesel oil. [522]
September 5
  • Tuvalu joins the United Nations. [21]
September 6
  • The last wholly Swedish-owned arms manufacturer, Bofors, is sold to American arms manufacturer United Defense. [21]
  • (to September 8) World leaders attend the Millennium Summit at United Nations Headquarters. [21]
September 7
  • (to September 14) The United Kingdom fuel protests take place, with refineries blockaded, and supply to the country's network of petrol stations halted. [21]
September 8
  • Albania officially joins the World Trade Organization. [21]
September 14
  • A tugboat puts a 4-foot gash in US Navy ship USS Detroit, spilling 113,000 litres of oil across Sandy Hook Bay, New Jersey, USA. [522]
  • Microsoft launches the Windows Millenium Edition (Me) operating system. 400,000 copies of the retail upgrade copy are sold in the first month. [4] [5]
September 16
  • Peru's president Alberto Fujimori calls for new elections in which he will not run. [21]
September 21
  • McAfee.com and F-Secure researchers discover the first handheld computer virus "Phage", which targets the Palm OS. [4]
September 26
  • The Greek Express Samina ferry sinks off the coast of the island of Paros; 80 out of a total of over 500 passengers perish in one of Greece's worst sea disasters. [21]
  • Anti-globalization protests in Prague, Czech Republic, (some 15,000 protesters) turn violent during the IMF and World Bank summits. [21]
September 28
  • Israeli opposition leader Ariel Sharon visits the Temple Mount, protected by a several-hundred-strong Israeli police force. Palestinian riots erupt, leading into a full-fledged armed uprising (called the Al-Aqsa Intifada by sympathizers and the Oslo War by opponents). [21]
September 29
  • The Long Kesh prison in Northern Ireland is closed. [21]
October 4
  • Panama-registered tanker Natuna Sea runs aground damaging four of its cargo tanks, spilling 8.2 million litres of oil in Indonesian waters off the Batu Berhanti Beacon. [522]
October 5
  • President Slobodan MiloÜevic leaves office after widespread demonstrations throughout Serbia and the withdrawal of Russian support. [21]
October 6
  • The last Mini automobile is produced in Longbridge, England. [21]
October 11
  • 250 million gallons of coal sludge spill in Martin County, Kentucky, USA. [21]
October 12
  • In Aden, Yemen, the USS Cole is badly damaged by two suicide bombers, who placed a small boat laden with explosives along-side the United States Navy destroyer, killing 17 crew members and wounding at least 39. [21]
October 15
  • Nintendo releases the Pokémon Gold and Pokémon Silver video games for the Game Boy Color in the USA. 1.4 million copies sell in the first week. [9]
October 21
  • Fifteen Arab leaders convene in Cairo, Egypt, for their first summit in four years; the Libyan delegation walks out, angry over signs the summit will stop short of calling for breaking ties with Israel. [21]
October 22
  • The Mainichi Shinbun newspaper exposes Japanese archeologist Shinichi Fujimura as a fraud; Japanese archaeologists had based their treatises on his findings. [21]
October 23
  • American Secretary of State Madeleine Albright holds talks with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Il. [21]
October 25
  • Canada's TSX stock market index drops a record 840.26 points, to 9,511.84. [105]
October 26
  • Pakistani authorities announce that their police have found an apparently ancient mummy of a Persian princess in the province of Balochistan. (Iran, Pakistan and the Taliban all claim the mummy until Pakistan announces it is a forgery on April 17, 2001.) [21]
  • Sony Computer Entertainment introduces the Sony PlayStation 2 in the USA. The system can also play PlayStation games, and supports DVD-ROM, DVD-Video, CD-ROM, and Dolby Digital media. Price is about US$300. Sales during the first week: 681,855. [9]
October 31
  • Singapore Airlines Flight 006 collides with construction equipment in the Chiang Kai Shek International Airport, killing 83. [21]
November 2
  • The first crew arrives at the International Space Station. [5]
November 3
  • Widespread flooding occurs throughout England and Wales after days of heavy rain. [21]
November 4
  • A Petrobras oil tanker spills 50,000 litres of crude oil near a beach resort area. [522]
November 7
  • United States presidential election: Republican candidate Texas Governor George W. Bush defeats Democratic Vice President Al Gore in the closest election in US history, but the final outcome is not known for over a month because of disputed votes in Florida. [21]
  • In London, a criminal gang raids the Millennium Dome to steal The Millennium Star diamond, but police surveillance catches them in the act. [21]
November 11
  • Kaprun disaster, Austria: A cable car fire in an alpine tunnel kills 155 skiers and snowboarders. [21]
November 14
  • A small Chinese oil freighter collides with a Norwegian vessel and sinks north of Lantau Island, Hong Kong, leaking about 230,000 litres of heavy oil, creating a 10,000-square metre oil slick. [522]
November 15
  • A new Indian state called Jharkhand is formed, carving out the South Chhota Nagpur area from Bihar in India. [21]
November 16
  • Bill Clinton becomes the first sitting U.S. President to visit Vietnam. [21]
November 17
  • A catastrophic landslide in Log pod Mangartom, Slovenia, kills seven, and causes millions of SIT of damage. It is one of the worst catastrophes in Slovenia in the past 100 years. [21]
  • Alberto Fujimori is removed from office as president of Peru. [21]
November 20
  • Intel introduces the Pentium 4 processor, at speeds of 1.4 and 1.5 GHz, with a 400 MHz system bus. It features NetBurst micro-architecture, and incorporates 42 million transistors. The processor adds 144 new Streaming SIMD Extensions 2 multimedia instructions. [4]
November 27
  • Jean Chrétien is re-elected as Prime Minister of Canada, as the Liberal Party increases its majority in the House of Commons. [21]
November 28
  • Ukrainian politician Oleksander Moroz touches off the Cassette Scandal by publicly accusing President Leonid Kuchma of involvement in the murder of journalist Georgiy Gongadze. [21]
  • A tanker spills 2.1 million litres of crude oil into the Missippi River, USA. [522]
December 1
  • Vicente Fox takes office as President of Mexico. [21]
December 5
  • The Fireball Network of cameras in Europe records a fireball of estimated weight 270kg over Germany. [523.46]
December 6
  • Infogrames of France acquires Hasbro Interactive of the USA for US$5 million cash and US$95 million in stock. [4]
December 10
  • Herbert Kroemer wins the Nobel Prize in Physics; Kroemer carried on his work in fast transistors, laser diodes and integrated chips while working for RCA laboratories and Varian Associates. [37]
December 15
  • A Norwegian freighter runs aground off the city of Haugesund, Norway, spilling some 116,000 litres of fuel oil, some of which immediately washes up on nearby coastlines. Some 81,000 litres are recovered by use of oil skimmers. [522]
December 23
  • The Russian government officially admits to the unjustifiable arrest and murder of Swedish diplomat Raoul Wallenberg in 1945. [7]
December 28
  • U.S. retail giant Montgomery Ward announces it is going out of business, after 128 years. [21]
December 30
  • A series of bombs explode in various places in Metro Manila, Philippines, within a span of a few hours, killing 22 and injuring about 100. [21]
December 31
  • The Millennium Dome closes its doors one year to the day of its opening. [21]
