  • The Qinghai-Tibet Railway launches a trial operation, connecting China proper and Tibet for the first time. [5] [27]
July 2
  • A presidential election is held in Mexico. Felipe Calderón is confirmed as the winner on September 5. [27]
July 3
  • The asteroid labeled as 2004 XP14 flies within 432,308 km (268,624 miles) of Earth. [5]
July 4
  • Space Shuttle Discovery is launched to the International Space Station. It returns safely on July 17. [27]
July 5
  • North Korea test fires missiles, timed with the liftoff of Space Shuttle Discovery, preceding the fireworks celebrations that night in America. The long range Taepodong-2 reportedly fails shortly after takeoff. [27]
July 6
  • The Nathula Pass between India and China, sealed during the Sino-Indian War, re-opens for trade after 44 years. [27]
July 7
  • Buena Vista releases the film Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest to theaters. (Total world gross ticket sales: $1.1 billion (1st for 2006).) [6] [929]

  • S7 Airlines Flight 778 crashes into a concrete barrier shortly after landing, killing at least 122 people and leaving many injured. [27]
July 10
  • Pakistan International Airlines Flight 688 crashes in Multan, Pakistan shortly after takeoff. [27]
  • An ice ball the size of a microwave oven lands in Douglasdale, South Africa, creating a small crater on the pavement where it lands. [521]
July 11
  • A series of coordinated bomb attacks strikes several commuter trains in Mumbai, India during the evening rush hour. [27]
July 12
  • Israeli troops invade Lebanon in response to Hezbollah kidnapping two Israeli soldiers and killing three. Hezbollah declares open war against Israel two days later. [27]
July 14
  • A meteor explodes over the Oslo Fjord, Norway, depositing numerous meteorites over the area. [521]
July 17
  • Space Shuttle Discovery returns to Earth from the International Space Station, thirteen days after its launch. [27]
July 18
  • The SS Nomadic, the last floating link to RMS Titanic, returns home to a great reception in Belfast, Ireland. [27]

  • Advanced Micro Devices agrees to pay US$5.4 billion in cash and stock to acquire ATI Technologies of Canada. [4]

  • BP oil company in Alaska announces it would have to replace 16 miles of feeder lines in its North Slope oil facility, shutting down about 50 percent of Prudhoe Bay's production. [93.58]

  • London Metropolitan Police make 21 arrests in connection to an apparent terrorist plot that involved aircraft traveling from the United Kingdom to the United States. Liquids and gels are banned from checked and carry-on baggage. [27]

  • A resolution to end the 2006 Lebanon War is unanimously accepted by the United Nations Security Council. [27]
August 14
  • A United Nations cease fire takes effect in the 2006 Lebanon War. [27]

  • Pulkovo Airlines Flight 612 crashes near the Russian border in Ukraine, killing 171 people, including 45 children. [27]
  • The ICM awards Grigori Perelman the Fields Medal for proving the Poincare conjecture, one of seven Millennium Prize Problems. Perelman refuses the medal. [27]
August 23
  • In Austria, Natascha Kampusch manages to escape after being kidnapped eight years ago by Wolfgang Priklopil who locked her up in his cellar. Priklopil commits suicide by throwing himself in front of a train. [27]
August 24
  • The International Astronomical Union defines 'planet' at its 26th General Assembly, demoting Pluto to the status of 'dwarf planet' more than 70 years after its discovery. [5] [27]

  • Comair Flight 5191, carrying 50 people, crashes shortly after take-off from Blue Grass Airport in Lexington, Kentucky. [27]
August 28
  • A Greyhound Lines bus from New York City to Montreal, carrying 52 people, crashes at mile 115 on Interstate 87 near Elizabethtown killing five people including the driver, and several are seriously injured. [27]

  • Edvard Munch paintings The Scream and Madonna are recovered in a police raid in Oslo, Norway. [27]
September 1
  • A fire kills 29 of 148 people aboard an Iran Air Tours Tu-154M aircraft after the plane lands in Mashhad, Iran. [27]
September 2
  • US military hands over the Abu Ghraib prison to the Iraqi government. [192.8]
  • A Nimrod MR2 plane based at RAF Kinloss, Scotland, crashes in the Southern Province of Kandahar, Afghanistan, due to a fuel leak. All 14 crew on board are killed. [27] [102.66]

  • The European Space Agency's SMART-1 is deliberately crashed into the Moon, the first controlled lunar impact accompanied by real-time observation from Earth. [524.47] [1587.6]

  • Chiang Kai-shek International Airport in Taipei is renamed to Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport. [27]
September 9
  • Space Shuttle Atlantis is launched on a mission to build up the International Space Station. It returns safe and successful on September 21. [27]
  • The Journal of Geophysical Research - Atmospheres reports two regions of the lower stratosphere show improvements in ozone layer: one no longer decreasing, the other shows signs of increasing. [32.11]

  • Death of Taufa'ahau Tupou IV, King of Tonga (born 1918). [27]
September 12
  • Apple Computer announces the iTunes movie store, initially with 75 Disney company movies for download. Prices range from US$10 to 16 per film. [6]
  • A stampede at a rally in Yemen leaves 41 dead. [27]
  • Pope Benedict XVI gives a lecture in Germany; he quotes a criticism of the Islamic faith, sparking mass protest. [27]
  • A meteor streaks across the sky in New Zealand, creating a sonic boom at about 40,000kph, turning into a fireball and depositing rocks on the ground. [521]
September 13
  • The Dawson College Shooting occurs in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, leaving one student dead and 19 others injured. [27]
  • The solar system's largest dwarf planet, designated until now as 2003 UB313, is officially named "Eris"; its satellite is now known as "Dysnomia". [27]
September 15
  • Spinach contaminated with E. coli kills one person and poisons over 100 others in 20 states of the United States. [27]
September 16
  • Five churches are attacked in Palestinian areas following the Pope's comments on Islam. [27]
September 17
  • The Alliance for Sweden claims victory in the Swedish general election. [27]
September 19
  • Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra of Thailand declares a state of emergency in Bangkok as members of the Royal Thai Army stage a coup d'état. The army announces the removal of Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra from power. [27]
September 22
  • A Transrapid Maglev train crashes into a maintenance vehicle on a test track in Germany, killing 23 and injuring 10; it is the first recorded fatal accident involving a Maglev. [27]
September 23
  • Toomas Hendrik Ilves is elected President of Estonia. [27]
September 25
  • The Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans re-opens 13 months after Hurricane Katrina with extensive repairs, including the largest re-roofing project in the United States. [27]

  • Diet of Japan elects Shinzo Abe as new Prime Minister of Japan succeeding Junichiro Koizumi. [27]
September 28
  • After 40 years of development, Suvarnabhumi Airport opens in Bangkok, Thailand replacing Don Mueang International Airport as Bangkok's primary airport for commercial flights. [27]
  • Sony issues a global recall of bad lithium-ion batteries. [4]

  • Gol Flight 1907, a Boeing 737-800, collides with a business jet over the Amazon Rainforest killing all 154 onboard. [27]
